Inspired Recipe: Sensuous Sundae
In 50 Shades of Grey, innocent Anastasia Steele tries to get in touch with her blossoming sexuality. We may not prefer the Grey-Steele methods, but all of us could do to amp up sensuality in our lives. That's why I've tackled the world's sexiest meal (dessert!) and pumped it as full of as many aphrodisiacs as possible (ginger! dark chocolate! cranberries! red, the color of lust!). Delight in this sensual sundae, but be smart about who you invite to join you.
POACHED PEARS IN CRAN-RASPBERRY PUREE
- 2 1/2 cups frozen raspberries
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1 1/2 cup cranberry juice
- 2 large pears (firm but ripe, peeled, cored and cut into 3/4-inch-thick wedges)
Combine berries, sugar and juice in heavy large skillet. Bring to boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Simmer over medium heat, about 15 minutes.
Puree in processor until smooth. Strain into same skillet.
Bring puree to simmer over medium heat.
Add pear wedges and stir to coat. Simmer until pears are tender, about 20 minutes.
Using slotted spoon, remove pears from skillet and place in a bowl to the side. Pour the remaining puree in a separate bowl.
Serve alone or with our chocolate cookies and ginger frozen yogurt to create a sensuous sundae.
DARK CHOCOLATE CHEWY COOKIES
- Nonstick vegetable oil spray
- 1 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips (about 9 ounces, divided)
- 3 large egg whites (room temperature)
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar (divided)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray two large baking sheets with nonstick spray. Melt one cup chocolate chips in glass bowl in microwave, stirring twice, about two minutes. Cool slightly.
Using electric mixer, beat whites in large bowl to soft peaks. Gradually beat in one cup sugar. Continue beating until mixture resembles soft marshmallow creme. Whisk one cup sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt in medium bowl to blend. On low speed, beat dry ingredients into meringue. Stir in lukewarm chocolate and 1/2 cup chocolate chips (dough will become stiff).
Place half cup sugar in bowl. Roll one rounded tablespoon dough into ball then roll in sugar, coating thickly. Place on prepared sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, spacing two inches apart. Bake until puffed and tops crack, about 10 minutes. Cool cookies on rack 10 minutes.
Sensuous Sundae: Assembly
Coat individual bowls with purée from the pear preparation. Place a cookie on the bottom of the bowl. Scoop in ginger ice cream—you can cheat and chop candied ginger into vanilla ice cream or, as we prefer it, greek-style frozen yogurt (above). Top with poached pears. Enjoy!
