Bookmarked: The Reading While Eating Edition

Welcome back to Bookmarked. In this weekly series, I bookmark things I covet while sharing alternatives I can actually attain in the meantime. This is the reading while eating edition.

We love reading, and we love food, and we love eating while we read. But here’s a problem…that can get really messy! There are many possible solutions to this problem, including: stop multitasking, already; only eat non-greasy finger-foods; or make a loved one read out loud to you so you can feast to your heart’s content. I think the best solution, however, is to get a really awesome tray! Once you have a hefty tray in a good size, meals become infinitely more portable and infinitely better companions during your read-in-bed or read-on-the-couch times. Naturally, a good tray will also be a friend when you’re throwing delightful dinner parties.

The key is not to skimp too much on your tray of choice. You need handles you can trust, a design you won’t fall out of love with, and the right size to be roomy but never unwieldy. I absolutely love this tray from Jonathan Adler, and it checks all those boxes — fun but timeless, sturdy and medium-sized. But the $175 price tag is much higher than that whole “let’s just eat and then read” decision may warrant.

In the meantime, here’s a fun and functional acrylic bed tray from CB2. Breakfast and a book in bed just got more practical, you guys! It makes a great workstation, plate on your lap, and excuse for someone to get up early and bring you juice. Personally, I’m in for all of the above.

Which of these go-to trays would you choose?
